Lawn Mowing in Falsterbo, Sandy Soil, Salt and Watering

Falsterbo's sandy soil drains for free but stresses the lawn in summer. Our guide shows how to mow, water and fertilise for a green lawn all season.

Lawn Mowing in Falsterbo

The lots on the Falsterbo peninsula are beautiful, but the lawns are often trickier than they look. The sandy soil underfoot gives perfect drainage, but it also means water flows through, nutrients leach, and drought hits hard already in mid-June. Add sea wind, salt spray and drifting sand, and you have a lawn that requires slightly different knowledge than standard Skåne clay.

We mow lawns on over a hundred lots on the Falsterbo peninsula and in Skanör, from summer villas closest to the beach to year-round villa areas around Kalkstrand and Falsterbo central. Here is what you need to know.

The sandy soil under Falsterbo

The entire Falsterbo peninsula sits on sand deposits from the last ice age's glacial rivers, later shaped by wind and water. Sandy soil is classic in two ways:

The upsides:

  • Perfect drainage. Standing water on the lawn is rare, even after heavy rain
  • Ground bears weight year-round. Mowing after rain leaves no ruts, common on Bjärred clay
  • Frost releases early in spring, you can start the season 1-2 weeks before Lommaslätten

The downsides:

  • Water does not stay. Sandy soil retains only 5-10% as much water as clay
  • Nutrients leach. Nitrogen and potassium disappear quickly with rain and watering
  • The lawn wilts fast in July. Two weeks of drought and standard grass starts yellowing

Understand the soil, and you handle the summer.

When does the mowing season start in Falsterbo?

Falsterbo has Skåne's mildest winter climate. The Östersjön (or Öresund) keeps temperatures steady and frost releases early. In practice the first cut lands roughly:

  • Last week of March or first week of April in a normal year

A week earlier than Bjärred, two weeks earlier than Lund. Wait for the three signs we always check:

  1. Average temperature above +5 °C for one to two weeks
  2. Grass has begun to sprout new shoots
  3. The lawn is dry on the surface, no dew or moisture remaining

More on the spring start in when to mow the lawn for the first time in Skåne.

Mowing height, taller is better on sand

Standard cutting heights for a normal lawn do not work on sand. You must keep the lawn taller than the neighbour on clay. Long blades shade the soil, retain moisture and protect roots from sun exposure.

Our recommendation for Falsterbo:

Recommended mowing height by season, Falsterbo

Recommended mowing height by season, Falsterbo

Spring start

April

35-40 mm

May to June

40-45 mm

July to August

Drought

50-55 mm

September

45-50 mm

October

Closing the season

35-40 mm
Compared with a standard lawn in Lund, you cut the Falsterbo lawn 5 to 10 mm taller through the entire season.

Watering, what actually decides

You cannot avoid watering during drought, sandy soil demands it. But how you water makes all the difference.

The right way:

  • Deep water once a week with 20-25 mm (put a tin under the sprinkler and measure how long it takes to reach 25 mm)
  • Early in the morning (before 9) or after sunset, so the water has time to soak in without evaporation
  • Preferably automated, drip line or pop-up sprinklers, so it is continuous

The wrong way:

  • Short watering every evening (roots stay shallow and drought stress gets worse)
  • Watering in the middle of the day (60% evaporates)
  • Watering right after mowing (the lawn is stressed, water is needed a day later)

Mulching, free nutrients returned

Sandy soil leaches nutrients quickly, so mulching (finely grinding the clippings and leaving them on the lawn instead of collecting) is invaluable. The clippings break down within 1-2 weeks and return nitrogen, potassium and organic matter directly to the soil.

Robotic mowers mulch automatically and therefore suit Falsterbo lots especially well. We have installed robots on over 50 villa gardens on the peninsula, usually Husqvarna Automower or similar. Combined with manual edging every other week, that is enough for an excellent lawn.

Salt-tolerant grass mixes

On exposed lots closest to the beach, salt spray burns top blades. Standard grass mixes with perennial rye-grass (Lolium perenne) tolerate it poorly. Better choices:

  • Red fescue (Festuca rubra) - tolerates salt, drought and low cutting heights
  • Hard fescue (Festuca ovina) - very drought-tolerant, perfect for dune lots
  • Creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) - tolerates the most, but requires closer mowing

When reseeding or recovering after salt flooding we recommend a mix dominated by red fescue.

Fertilisation on sandy soil

Since sand leaches nutrients, you need to fertilise more often and in smaller doses than on clay:

  • April: Spring feed with slow-release nitrogen
  • June: Light feed after the first heat wave
  • August: Late-summer feed (low nitrogen, high potassium)
  • October: Autumn feed for root development

Slow-release fertiliser (3-4 months) works better than fast-release that leaches in 2 weeks.

RUT deduction on lawn mowing

All our mowing work is RUT-eligible, 50% off the labor cost directly on the invoice. Max 75,000 SEK per person per year. Many of our customers in Falsterbo have seasonal contracts from April to October, we mow weekly, mulch, edge and adjust height to drought and season.

Frequently asked questions

Short, honest answers to what we get asked every week. If yours is not here, just call, we are happy to help.

  1. 01Why does the grass dry out so quickly in Falsterbo?
Sandy soil has low water-holding capacity. A hard summer rain disappears within two days. Combine that with hard sea wind and a midsummer without rain and you understand why yellowing patches are so common from mid-June to late August. Raise the mowing height, mulch the clippings, water deep but seldom, and the lawn will handle drought.
  2. 02Does salt water damage the lawn?
Indirectly, yes. Salt spray from Östersjön reduces vitality and burns top blades on exposed lots. Direct salt water from flooding is worse, the lawn dies completely in patches. Rinsing with fresh water immediately after a salt flood can save most of it. We recommend salt-tolerant grass mixes (red fescue, hard fescue) for exposed lots on the Falsterbo peninsula.
  3. 03How often should the lawn be mown in Falsterbo?
May to mid-June: once a week. July-August: every two weeks is often enough because drought slows growth. September: back to weekly. Salt-tolerant grasses like red fescue grow more slowly than standard, so you mow less often for the same lot size than in Lund or Limhamn.
  4. 04Do I need to water the lawn in Falsterbo?
Yes, at least during dry periods from mid-June to late August. Sandy soil does not retain water without supplementation. Optimal: one deep watering per week with 20-25 mm, rather than short watering every evening. Deep watering forces roots down and makes the lawn more drought-tolerant. Do it early in the morning or after sunset.
  5. 05Are robotic mowers good for Falsterbo lots?
Yes, robotic mowers suit sandy soil very well because mulching (leaving fine clippings) returns nutrients directly to the soil that otherwise leach out. We have installed robotic mowers on over 50 lots on the Falsterbo peninsula. Combine the robot with manual edging every other week for the best appearance.
