Well-kept lawn after mowing with even stripes and sharp edges against the bed

The turn-of-century house from 1908 stands on one of the quiet streets in eastern Limhamn, with a carefully kept lawn of 620 square metres around it. Original stone paving in Skåne grey runs between the grass, a path to the veranda and a south-west patio. The owners wanted to hand over the recurring care while keeping the well-tended look.

Walking the garden we noted a mature lawn with a strong root system, light moss in the shade under a large beech, Fagus sylvatica, and worn edges where the grass had run out over the stone paving. The soil below is humus-rich moraine clay, typical of eastern Limhamn, which builds a tough, dense sward if mown at the right rhythm.

We set a plan with mowing every two weeks from April to October, height 4 centimetres in peak season and 5 centimetres through the July heat to spare the roots. Edging against the stone paving is done at every visit with a strimmer and a separate edger, so the stone line stays crisp. Clippings are mulched straight back into the lawn as natural fertiliser.

Once a season, in April, we scarify the lawn in the shaded sections under the beech and top dress with fine sand and lime to keep moss at bay. The RUT deduction covers 50 percent of the labour, which keeps recurring lawn mowing in Limhamn within economic reach even for larger villa plots.

What we found on site

  • Turn-of-century villa from 1908, 620 sqm lawn around the house
  • Original stone paving in Skåne grey runs through the plot
  • Shaded section with light moss under a large Fagus sylvatica
  • Humus-rich moraine clay, dense tough sward with the right care
  • Worn lawn edges where the grass has crept over the stone

How we approached the work

  1. Mowing every two weeks, April to October, same weekday each time
  2. Cut height 4 cm in April-June and September, 5 cm through the July heat
  3. Mulch mowing, clippings returned to the sward as feed
  4. Edging against stone paving with strimmer and edger
  5. Spring package: scarifying, sand top dressing and liming in April
  6. Autumn close-down: leaf collection and a final cut at 5 cm
The lawn looks the way it did when my grandfather kept it himself, NordVerk holds the edges against the stone paving just as the house deserves.

FAQs about lawn mowing in Limhamn

Short, honest answers to what we get asked every week. If yours is not here, just call, we are happy to help.

  1. 01How often should a Skåne lawn be mown?
Every two weeks is a good base rhythm in Skåne from late April to late October. Through May and June, when growth peaks, an extra cut in between can be useful. In the July heat we cut higher, 5 centimetres, and let the sward rest a little. We follow the one-third rule: never take more than a third of the blade in one go, otherwise the plant is stressed. For lawn mowing in Limhamn villa plots, every two weeks is usually exactly right.
  2. 02What do you do about moss under large trees?
Moss in the shade under a beech or oak signals low light, compacted ground and often low pH. We scarify out the moss layer in April, top dress with fine 0-2 mm quartz sand to aerate the soil, and add dolomitic limestone to lift the pH toward 6.5. Direct sowing with a shade-tolerant red fescue mix gives new grass cover. The result holds if you also raise the cut to 5 centimetres through the summer and avoid unnecessary watering.
  3. 03How do you keep the edge against stone paving sharp?
Grass always creeps over stone over time, especially in older Limhamn plots where the paving is laid in sand. We cut a vertical edge once a season with a lawn edger so that the sward breaks cleanly against the stone. At every mowing visit we then strim along that line with the Stihl FSA 60 R, so the edge holds all season. On long straight runs we use a string to keep the line against the stone perfectly true.
  4. 04Can recurring lawn mowing qualify for the RUT deduction?
Yes, regular lawn mowing counts as garden maintenance and qualifies for the RUT deduction at 50 percent of the labour cost. The deduction is applied directly on each invoice and handled by us with the Swedish Tax Agency. For a Limhamn villa with 620 square metres of lawn and mowing every two weeks across the season, the saving is significant. The spring package of scarifying, sand top dressing and liming is also covered as maintenance of an existing lawn.
